Hi,
As you can see the correct expression is going on a cruise around the world.

The world is (sort of) spherical so around is a better word if you intend to circumnavigate it. _________________ Cheers m' dears! |

Hello Mr. Torsten, Can you give an example differentiating the use of the phrases "across the world" and "around the world"? With regards, Santak Dalai |

Hi Santak,
As you can see from the conversation above ' around the world' is the correct expression.
'Across the world' is incorrect because of the shape of the world. We tend to speak about crossing countries, rather than the world.
He is travelling around the world from Australia to Alaska. He is travelling across the country from North to South _________________ Cheers m' dears! |

Hi Santak,
'Around the world' as the preferred choice in this test suggests physically travelling from one country to another. 'Across the world' is used more in a figurative sense to suggest worldwide as in: This piece of music is recognized across the world.

It's just a question of familiarising yourself enough with the vocabulary. There's no easy option, though there are some tips and tricks for remembering vocabulary, such as choosing an unfamiliar word and making sure you use it several times in a short period until you get used to it, or writing a small group of words and definitions on a note and sticking it in sight until you know them well. I believe some learners have used software to make 'flashcards' (small strips of card that they can pick up in any order and test themselves with) with words on one side and meanings on the other. _________________ Cheers m' dears! |
