a double negative? #1 (permalink) Thu Apr 24, 2008 11:28 am   a double negative?

Hi,

I quote a famous saying:

Quote:
Not only did he not suffer fools gladly, He did not suffer them at all

Doesn't it look like we have double negation in this sentence (that which I made bold) ? Or do I miss the point ?

thanks !

.
It looks like it, doesn't it?-- but I don't think it is. Or if it is, it is a quite acceptable form.

Hi Alex,

It is all right if you separate it out.

Two things are stressed: 1) He didn't suffer fools gladly.

2) He didn't suffer them at all.

Not only 1) but also 2)

Alan
