Hi, Actually the experession 'it's all Greek to me' is taken from shakespeare's 'Julius Caesar' that means things that speaker is unable to understand.

as for double dutch #11 (permalink) Thu Jun 25, 2009 12:36 pm   as for double dutch

My clearest memory of this saying goes back to my sunny days of youth in California, when now and again during summer a few neighborhood girls would grab their jump-ropes, step over to the middle of the lane, and start swinging two ropes in time to a song, a simple chanty, sing-songy song, meant mainly to keep the proper rhythm of things...

But I think what you're after is this: that of it being a reference to "nonsense," most likely very close to if not the same as "gobbledygook," with the latter being far more commonly heard in the western US, my old "neck of the woods."

Nowadays I'm very likely to say something like, "Eta kak Kitaiski," or, "That's like Chinese to me," simply because "gobbledygook" probably has no equivalent in Russian. Probably.

"It's all Greek to me" simply means I don't understand sth that is said or written. By the way, here in Bulgaria we also say "That's like Chinese to me." - in different languages we use different phrases. We should remember that idiom in English- just fixed expression. Exclamation
