TOEFL essay: Should a city try to preserve its old, historic buildings or destroy #1 (permalink) Tue May 06, 2008 4:04 am   TOEFL essay: Should a city try to preserve its old, historic buildings or destroy

Should a city try to preserve its old, historic buildings or destroy them and replace them with modern buildings? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

Urban planning is an activity which nearly always triggers a variety of fierce controversies among local residents. A number of opinions maintain that historic architectural structures should be conserved. Nevertheless, I am personally convinced that state-of-the-art architectural buildings ought to be erected to substitute outdated ones. This piece of writing will thoroughly clarify the rationale for my perspective.

Modern constructions prove to be extremely functional to cater to locals’ demand. Clearly, buildings constructed a long time ago bear virtually no practical use in today’s developed society. In some cases, these decrepit structures regularly either cause imminent dangers of collapse to the inhabitants or produce significant inconvenience for the city’s citizens. Conversely, modern buildings, when put up, are certain to satiate an array of urgent needs of a metropolitan center. The severe lack of office space for businesses, the sticky dearth of housing for local people would certainly be considerably mitigated with modern facilities. Indeed, the practical function of contemporary developments is an undeniable advantage.

In addition, the construction of modern structures would definitely result in substantial economic boons. The preservation of old and historic buildings which nearly bring about no significant economic benefits is undoubtedly a waste of money given that these obsolete structures almost always call for remarkable funds to renovate or keep themselves from constantly deteriorating. By contrast, the build-up of modern buildings is evidently able to deliver huge economic benefits. The construction of these up-to-date structures, for instance, is more than likely to create numerous jobs for townspeople. Furthermore, the ensuing erection of a large number of related essential structures such as roads, parking lots etc. would definitely ensue radically alter the appearance and remarkably boost economic development of an urban area. As a matter of fact, almost all local residents would be able to garner notable profits from these modern construction projects.

In conclusion, not only do modern constructions possess exceedingly practical use but these structures also generate extremely favorable economic influences. Thus, municipal authorities are strongly recommended to give the top priority in city planning to these buildings.

In my piece of writing, I tended to refer to decrepit apartment blocks Smile . Anyway, I chose to write in the most effective way for me, not the best way. Otherwise, I should have written a thick book discussing this topic thoroughly Razz . Thanks for your comment ! By the way, you should split your sentence into at least two as I find such a long sentence quite confusing.
