"be compared to" vs "be compared with" #1 (permalink) Fri May 09, 2008 11:42 am   "be compared to" vs "be compared with"

Hi,
Please tell me the difference between "be compared to" and "be compared with".
Is it another matter of British English vs American English?

Many thanks in advance
Nessie

"be compared to" vs "be compared with" #2 (permalink) Sat May 10, 2008 0:09 am   "be compared to" vs "be compared with"

Hello Nessie,

As a BrE speaker, I use both. For me, if A is compared to B, it suggests:

A → B

while if A is compared with B, it suggests:

A ↔ B

(I expect other members would disagree, however; it probably varies from person to person.)

Have a good weekend,
