Duc wrote ''Sentence rewriting: 1.I find it surprising that she didn't like her present. ==> I would.... And here is my answer "I would have thought that she LIKED her present.'' But the correct one is "I would have thought that she WOULD HAVE LIKED her present.' After reading two phrase written in capitals ,please explain for me why ''she liked'' isn't true and the usage of ''would have..'' in this situation.'' And I wonder why the answer is ''I would have thought that she would have liked her present'' ,why they use ''would have'' -the past while the action ''I find...'' is in the present? |

I find it surprising that she didn't like her present. When I bought the present I thought... (... she would like it?) But the whole sentence I would have thought that she WOULD HAVE LIKED her present. is too complicated for me. _________________ I am an incurable optimist. |

I agree with Inga. Actually I can't transform the sentence "I find it surprising that she didn't like her present." into a sentence beginning with "I would..." without changing the meaning, so let's wait for some native speakers' ideas
As for the original sentence, here is my transformation: => I thought that she would like her present.

. I posted my two cents in the other thread: Speacial usage of 'would have V-ed" . _________________ Amy
