However, 'thoroughly' would not be a good alternative solution for the test sentence.

'Out of hand' suggests that something was done quickly and without much thought or deliberation.
'Thoroughly' has a sense of doing something painstakingly, with careful attention to detail.

Thanks, Pamela. It is utterly heartbreaking to lose a pet that you've had for years and years. On the other hand, I enjoy remembering how incredibly often he sat on my keyboard while I was attempting to post something here. (And that is precisely what he was doing when I took the picture.) :lol:
