However, 'thoroughly' would not be a good alternative solution for the test sentence.
'Out of hand' suggests that something was done quickly and without much thought or deliberation. 'Thoroughly' has a sense of doing something painstakingly, with careful attention to detail. . _________________ "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." ~ Abraham Lincoln |

Hi, Amy
Are you saying that you would go for quickly in the sentence in question? e.g. The manager dismissed the new proposal quickly ... |

Hi Alex
It would be so darn quick that it would probably be better to call it immediate. . _________________ "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." ~ Abraham Lincoln |

Hi Alex
Yes, that was my German cat -- but he could only understand English. He thought the German word 'nein' was the number of lives he had. . _________________ "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." ~ Abraham Lincoln |

. He died this week. But I feel sure he is continuing to sit on keyboards in "Kitty Heaven". . _________________ "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." ~ Abraham Lincoln |

. Thanks, Pamela. It is utterly heartbreaking to lose a pet that you've had for years and years. On the other hand, I enjoy remembering how incredibly often he sat on my keyboard while I was attempting to post something here. (And that is precisely what he was doing when I took the picture.) . _________________ "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." ~ Abraham Lincoln |
