Yes, but most of the people who get tazed do not die, and the taser is used to avoid shooting somebody or bashing his head in, which carries a far greater risk of death.
Notice that Amnesty International does not report on the actual physical condition of the people who died from the taser. I think it's more than likely consistent with the number of suspects who die when no force is used at all. This would include people weighing 300 to 500 pounds (136 kg to 227 kg, not unusual in the US), people whose systems are screwed up because of crack cocaine or methamphetamine, people who have one of those factors plus a heart condition, and a host of other problems that cause death even from minor stress situations. (Those people can die just from defecating too enthusiastically!) People who have this kind of problem should be advised by Amnesty International not to attack the police with hammers or any other implement. Of course, because Amnesty International's tendency is to consider American cops to be evil and raging criminals to be sad, misunderstood bunnies, they're going to make the cops look bad.
And notice that Amnesty International is concerned about pepper spray, because it "irritates the eyes and mucus membranes". So even if you don't kill or mutilate a menacing suspect, just making his day unhappy is a violation of his human rights.
AI is concerned about Americans having their eyes and mucus membranes temporarily irritated, but for years when I looked in their annual report on human rights abuses, I found no mention of the genocide and enslavement of thousands of black Christians in Sudan. It had been going on for years, but AI apparently didn't care enough to report on it. But don't let a cop irritate some American's mucus membranes! AI has its priorities all screwed up. |

Look closely at Alex's sig. There's no town of South Park, Colorado. It's a cartoon show. |

"Amnesty believes experts haven't fully examined the risk factors associated with Tasers; meanwhile, more officers are gaining access to them.
A number who have died after they were shocked with the Tasers were hyped up on drugs, Feuer said."

I think you'll find that AI began reporting the situation in Sudan long before many others did.

Really? What's the ratio of American cop stories to other stories here?

Should I be? Is American TV the world? |

Well, I do think the world of Ameican cartoons. They are of excellent quality. My favourites are The Simpsons (I watched all of them twice), South Park (can't tell exactly how many times I watched this one, maybe 6) Ameican Dad (I'm in the middle of watching this one) Dexter's laboratory (I donwloaded this one soon after Jamie talked about it on this forum, but haven't got a change to watch it)
In a word, they rock ! Really, try to download and watch them, your heart will grow fond of them. |

Back to the main question: If used in your country, are TASERs being used as tools of routine force, rather than as weapons of last resort?
NB This is not intended to be a discussion about whether tasers should be used at all or not. My main question is about use as tools of routine force versus use as weapons of last resort. |

The White House is another one. Quite good. The present series is the most cartoonlike since the days of Teflon Ron. |
