If used in your country, are TASERs being used as tools of routine force, rather than as weapons of last resort?

You're confused, Molly. The GUN is the weapon of last resort. The taser is the weapon they use when they don't feel the situation merits deadly force.

Before tasers were invented, police instead used big, hard wooden clubs and bashed people on the head with them. Sometimes they use a big steel flashlight, which is much worse than a club. I'd much rather get tazed than have my skull bashed in.

Or course, I don't plan to put myself into any situation where anyone would want to do that to me.

In which countries?

In the place where some of my ancestors were taken, the police used nooses.

You might not always have that choice. Sh*it happens.

In my country people generally don't get tazed unless they've done something wrong and refused to stop or be subdued. Often it's used when the suspect tries to attack the police. Before tasers, they often had to shoot the guy or bash his head in. Tasers aren't pleasant, but they're humane.

One comical incident occurred a year or two ago when some guy thought he was a ninja master and came at the cops flailing a samurai sword. ZING! Thirty years ago, the police would have had to shoot him, and that wouldn't have been funny. Thanks to tasers, the guy will probably be alive to tell his grandchildren about it.

Yes, that would be a situation when the TASER would be useful, but I was asking about incidents of routine use. Here, you seem to be saying that, generally, there are no incidents of routine use in the USA:

Is that what you're saying?

Tasers are routinely used in my country so that cops won't have to routinely use their guns. Sounds like compassion to me.

After all, your typical cop doesn't exactly LIKE shooting people.

Well, the cops I know (and I'm related to one) don't even like arresting people.

I have cops in my family, and several very talkative cops have been my students. It so happens that I know a LOT of people and listen to their stories.

Jamie said, "I'd much rather get tazed than have my skull bashed in."

But:

"To date, more than 150 people have died after they were stunned by a Taser, according to the Amnesty report."

That was in 2006 in the USA. What's the latest score?

Yeah, I know that Americans have adopted tasers and I favour the idea. America has always been a few steps ahead of Russia. Here the coppres (or 5-0 Wink ) still thrash people with bludgeons, bastards ! Like in the stone age.

But do you favour the idea even when they are used as tools of routine force?

I'm not sure what kind of "routie force" you're on about, but I am a stanch supporter of the idea of apprehending criminals without raising hell with shootings. You know, strays can hit innocent onlookers, and I don't want to be shot by a cop. Beside, sometimes people can do weird stuff in the heat of the moment and cops might take an innosent man for a criminal and gun him/her down.
It's much better to be subdued by a charge of electricity than to end up in hospital with a hole in the head Wink

That's just my wishful (or even wistful) thinking. I just take to Colorado.
Bu I do believe I mentioned where I'm from. I'm sure it has just slipped your mind. Wink
