Yes; the author puts "lacking" in inverted commas or italics, e.g.
| Quote: |
In fact, the reliance on lack or anti-production is one of the strangest and most pervasive qualities of capitalism (Deleuze and Guattari 1983).
The lacking within the capitalist system is tied to the exercise of creating reductive measures (rabattu).
|
The inverted commas / italics indicate that the word is to be understood in a special sense. (It also seems to relate to an article by Deleuze and Guattari.)
I did wonder idly whether Moffatt's term represented some Marxian original (perhaps Mangel, "shortage", "deficiency").

If you want to talk to Ken Moffat about a specialized concept that he refers to as 'lacking', no problem. If you want to use the word 'lacking' in a more typical and natural way, you might want to avoid reading Ken's article. . |
Hi, Amy
Spare me, please :) I have no urge to talk to Ken Moffat, I only wanted to give "the lacking of" a fare trial, and I see it is guilty of being unnatural and unusual, and that's really all I hoped to find out :) Thanks again. |
