structures with "look like" Wed May 28, 2008 23:07 pm  structures with "look like"

Hi,

Could you please help me with these structures?

She looks like her mother. - does it refer just to the similar physical appearance?
She is like her mother - does it refer just to her personality?
She takes after her mother - does it mean that she is similar to her mother both physically and in her personality?

Thanks
Liza

She looks like her mother. - does it refer just to the similar physical appearance? This is most often a reference to physical facial (head) features -- i.e. hair color, eye color, shape of the nose, shape of the face, etc.
She is like her mother - does it refer just to her personality? Yes, that would generally be the case.
She takes after her mother - does it mean that she is similar to her mother both physically and in her personality? Yes, but depending on the broader context, the reference is often to just one or the other (i.e. either physical appearance or personality).
