A toss is a type of throw. There are a few ways of throwing.

To me a toss has always (or at least generally) referred to a slow- or mid-paced looping throw.

So if you and I are tossing a baseball back and forth, neither one of us should end up with a sore palm.

On the other hand, a throw may be more forceful.

Molly has a good point IMO -- a "toss" is a subset of a "throw".

How about here, Prez?

The wild ocean was tossing the little boat around.
