TOEFL essay: A company has announced that it wishes to build a large factory... #1 (permalink) Thu Jun 05, 2008 3:16 am   TOEFL essay: A company has announced that it wishes to build a large factory...

A company has announced that it wishes to build a large factory near to your community. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this new influence on your community. Do you support or oppose the factory? Explain your position.

My community is located far from the downtown of the city; however, this is not a big deal for any of my friends who are living here. They say that this is a quite and peaceful place where their kids can enjoy of big open places to run and play. Our community is integrated for a basic school, a church, a park (with swings, slides and a paved road when people can skate, to ride bike or run). We also have a grocery store and a coffee shop. We don’t really need to go often to the city. We love our community. However, now I feel very worry because a company has announced that it wants to build a big factory near from our community. I am not against the progress. A new factory can provide new employment’s opportunities and elaboration of resources (instead of importation of them) will make them cheaper and more accessible to customers. I think factories bring important benefits to local economies and are inevitable for the growing of a city. But I can not understand is why this factory needs to be built right in front of our community. I am sure that there are other places where it can be built. With the construction of this factory our environment will be contaminated with drain of toxic residues, smoke and noise. I totally disagree with the construction of this factory or any other near of a community. Some time ago I saw on T.V. news about a community which was located near of a factory. This factory was working there since 30 years ago with dangerous material; little by little this factory contaminated the ground and the water around it. First some people began to feel tired or a little sick, but suddenly some children shows respiratory problems and chronic diseases, some women suffered aborts or began to having babies with illnesses. We love our community and we would like to keep it safe for our children, moreover we do not have the economical possibility to buy a house right now. I hope our government hear our request and could help us to solve this problem.
