So I was suggesting that maybe it was not the public schools that made them that way, but the high positions or the big business they are in right now.

Not in the case of the ones I'm referring to, but there are many others who have been affected by big business, yes.

public schoolers

Those who attended the kind of school described in the second definition of "public school" here:

A traditional privately operated secondary school which commonly requires the payment of fees for its pupils, and is usually a boarding school. This usage is common in the United Kingdom (although can be ambiguous in Scotland) and occasional in other English-speaking Commonwealth countries.

Very interesting. And in Nigerian English: "public school" would imply which meaning?

How so? Were you not aware of that use of "public school"? Or is it the term "schoolers" you have a problem with?

That would depend on your family background, mostly. My family would know and use both meanings. Most people would know the first meaning.

Molly, just curious, how's the lunch at Nigerian public schools?

Or, at least, at the schools you attended?

I can just imagine the delightful conversations.

Molly: Have you heard that Bridget is going to public school?

Mike: Really? That must be costing her a pretty penny.

Molly: Not public school, you moron! I said public school!!!

Mike: Do you mean the modalised one or unmodalised one?

Molly: Neither. Any idiot would know that I'm talking about the one with the metal detectors.

There's that "baa-baa!" again.

Try taking that dialogue here:

Amy Yankee: Have you heard that Jamie is going to public school?

Mr P-astor Brit: Really? That must be costing him a pretty penny.

Amy Yankee: Not public school, you moron! I said public school!!!

Mr P-astor Brit: Do you mean the modalised one or unmodalised one?

Amy Yankee: Neither. Any idiot would know that I'm talking about the one with the metal detectors. The one we Yanks have done so well to create.

At least most of my family are bi-dialectal. Yours?

It comes on plates and we eat with a knife and fork? Surprised?

I guess my last post was right on the money. ;)

So, how about really answering Prezbucky's question. Tell us more about Nigerian public schools and what it's like to attend one.

Hey, Prez seems to think he knows all there is to know about Africa - it's that place were everyone dodges bullets and wishes they lived in the good ole USA. What can you teach someone who knows such?

I'm aware of that usage of "public school" in BrE; but in Nigerian English, "public school" generally does not mean "private school".

It interested me that you should choose the BrE version.

In other words, you don't have any firsthand knowledge of living in Nigeria at all. That's too bad. :(

Molly, settle down please, sheesh. Africa is (I've heard) a gorgeous continent with generally good people.

Just some places are rough, that's all -- no different from most places.

Heck, there are places in the US in/through which I definitely wouldn't want to walk at night.

I just wanted to know about the food at your school(s).

Do you guys eat hamburgers, pizza... how much has western cuisine infiltrated Nigerian menus?

(I guess it's more a question about Nigerian cuisine... not just the food at Nigerian schools. hehe)
