Reported speech (Marry: What shall we do on saturday?) #1 (permalink) Sun Jun 08, 2008 18:39 pm   Reported speech (Marry: What shall we do on saturday?)

Hi,
Please have a look at this conversation:

Marry: What shall we do on saturday?
Ann: What about having a party?

=> Change into reported speech:
Ann suggested ....

=> Which of the following is better:
1. Ann suggested having a party on saturday to Marry
2. Ann suggested to Marry having a party on saturday

=> I find neither sentence very fluent. #2 sounds quite odd indeed, #1 seems grammatically correct, but the use of "to Marry" at the end of the sentence makes it not very good-sounding. What do you think?
By the way, can we say:

Ann suggested to Marry about having a party on saturday?

Many thanks
Nessie

I would recommend the following:

Ann suggested to Mary that they have a party on Saturday. ("Have" is in the subjunctive.)
