How to set Vista to automatic dial-up? #1 (permalink) Thu Jun 12, 2008 18:34 pm   How to set Vista to automatic dial-up?

Hi, I use Vista and want my UMTS dial-up connection to start automatically once I start my system. Does anyone happen to know how to do this?

Thanks,
Torsten

The best way to do anything with Vista is to downgrade back to XP or get a Mac.

I don't think so. Vista has been performing better than XP, no single crash or problem in over a year. The days of XP are numbered so why would I go back to a system that soon will be outdated?

I'm being sarcastic. I have been working with Vista and find it much worse than XP because its hyper-security mania gets in the way of my work and disables anything that happens to be a macro, including important translation programs I have to use. It also crashes a lot of programs. You're the first person I've ever heard say that Vista runs better than XP.

Do you mean you have to click the tray icon every time you need to connect? Maybe you need to go to the device manager and change the TCP/IP properties to "connect automatically".

After you do that, Vista will probably change the setting, but before connecting automatically, it will ask you every time if you really want to connect automatically.

No, it won't. I think whatever UMTS device that Torsten is using needs extra attention. Vista set the internet connection up for me automatically as soon as I plugged in the USB cable. With my old laptop you didn't know the trouble I had to set up the router for my internet connection, cable TV and IP phone. When I got my new half breed desktop and laptop (It's a desktop but portable like laptop, and pink!) I sighed on the thought of setting it up all over again. And to my surprise, as soon as I plugged the USB cable in, voila! I didn't have to do a thing, except after that the system asked me to shut down another connection because apparently Vista detected the wireless connection too. (I was avoiding the wireless thingy because it's not so great when you are also sharing it with a cable TV, at least not within this mountainy area)

Chill out, Jamie. Vista isn't that bad, at all. And one day when I'm a millionaire, I'll try every OS I can :D

I had the opposite experience you have. I've never had a problem configuring an Internet connection before Vista, but Vista gives me constant problems, because it's so active and wants to "help" so much.

Of course, I don't use Windows that much anyway. ;)

Hi Nina,

Where do I change the TCP/IP settings in the device manager? My device manger doesn't seem to have this feature.

Thanks,
Torsten

Go to under the device you are using. Are you using a USB device or is it a card slot? If it is a device for connecting internet it should have this feature.

Actually, I run Windows through an emulator, so Windows only THINKS it has PC hardware.

It's a UMTS mini card. The device manager recognizes it but doesn't have an "automatic dial-up" feature.

Usually we change the TCP/IP properties under the software that comes with the device. But under some circumstances where you need to not use the software, you need to reinstall your device as a standard USB device and not as what it comes, then you can change the properties under device manager, instead of using the software.

I am not very familiar with mini cards, but I think under "advance setting" there must be network properties that you can change. I think this is where the settings that you need to change are. Unless the device doesn't offer you that.

I hope this gives you some idea on where to experiment.

You mean that Windows THINKS it's running on PC? What's weird with that?

I agree that Vista is the worst OS Microsoft ever released since win2k. Even Bill Gatet himself in an interview said:
--What do you think is in the last, say, 5 years.. what one product you wish you could've polished a little more
--Ask me when we ship the next version of Windows.

The other day I bought a new laptop with Vista on it. I used it for a couple of days and understood that I could not go on like that any more and I went to Microsoft and downloaded win2k8 and installed it. And my experience with it so far is flawless, I can't complain. It runs fatser, it doesn't hang when I launch my programs. I really recommend it to anyone who got tired of Vista. In a word, Vista sucks. I would say that they hurried so much to release Vista that they had forgotten all about what is known as "quality"
