Hi, I am from the Southern part of India #1 (permalink) Sun Jun 15, 2008 20:50 pm   Hi, I am from the Southern part of India

Hello Everyone:
I am a new member in this forum. I am from the southern part of India. I have two graduate degrees one from India and another one from the U.S.
My aspiration is to become a good writer in English. I do all the exercises like reading books, listening to english conversations, learning new words everyday etc. regularly that are necessary to improve language fluency. Still, I couldn't write just like a native english speaker. People reading my texts says that though my grammar usage is correct, the sentence construction is very poor. Also, they say that I am translating the sentence from my native language, leading to erroneous sentence construction in english.
Since good english teachers are here, I thought I could visit here and clarify some of my doubts in english writing. My question is: What do they mean by sentence construction? How to avoid the influence of your native language while writing in english? Are there any specific ways to avoid such influences?
Thank you
Regards,
Gemini

Hi Mr. Torsten:
Thanks for your reply.
I write scientific papers. Also, I participate in many forum discussions. They appreciate my ideas but comment on my sentence construction. Sometimes, I feel the flow is missing in my writing. I read a lot. I think my vocabulary is not that bad. Still, I have problems in writing.
Any tips on improving my writing will be helpful. I would appreciate it very much. Thank you
Regards,
Gemini
