I've got an Amr Diab CD (Egyptian pop star), and I've gotten used to hearing a few words/phrases... like:

ya

la (lah)

sadekny khalas

ya habiby la

habiby

ahabek

baed ellayaly

wala ala baloh

aktar wahed

wala

etc.

Is there an Arabic speaker here who can fill me in on these words/phrases?

Thanks so much,

Tom

Hey, Tom. What's with the Arabic music? Did some Arab girl tickle your fancy lately? Very Happy

By the way, I think "Ya Lah" is the short form of "Ya Allah" (Oh God) and I know "Ya habibi" means "my lover".

Oh, good luck with your pursuit! Very Happy

Nina, thanks -- my sister taught in Cairo for a year. The CD was a souvenir.

Tom,

Did you listen to Khaled's Didi. It was a big hit some 15 years ago.

BTW, what do you mean by "Billie Jean is not my lover"?

I haven't knowingly listened to/heard Khaled's Didi.
---

"Billie Jean is not my lover" is a line from Michael Jackson's early-'80s hit song "Billie Jean".

He seems pretty weird (if not dangerous) now, but back in the '80s he was the shiznit, with mega-huge multi-platinum albums Thriller and Bad.

In third grade, my favorite album was "Thriller". It was comprised of tunes like:

Thriller
Billie Jean
Beat It
The Girl Is Mine (with Paul McCartney)
PYT
Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'
Human Nature

(all top-10 hits)

It could be argued that Thriller was one of the top five popular albums of the 1980s, and that Bad was one of the top 20 or so.

Here's the Wiki link to the Thriller album page. On this site there are also links to the hit songs:

la means no. wala al baloh may mean not yet. sadekny means our friend and khalas means liberation which makes no sense. ihebka means i love you. aktar wahed means something alone.

Wouldn't the last one mean the only or the one who loves you?? I understand arabic, modern standard anyway, but what messes me up is how different spoken arabic can be.

Hello Coconut,

I cannot say much but it could be fit into all those minus one songs that I listen when I study or work. Generally, I think it's nice.

And welcome to English-test.net!
