I think you probably meant either "silence your cell phone" or "set it to vibrate." (Sometimes, people I know say "Set it to stun" because that was a line from the old Star Trek TV series, but they are just being funny. They mean set it to silent, or vibrate.)

Mute is what you press when you don't want the person you're on the phone with to hear what you are saying. For example, in a conference call, you might mute the phone before you say to your colleague, "Oh my god! I forgot all about that? Can we will get that done?" and she says, "No problem. We'll be fine." -- and then you unmute and say "No problem making that deadline, Steve."

Edit: Of course, you may have mean "mute" after all!

Yes, I am familiar only with "put it on silent". I thought mute was for TV only.

P/S: Thousand apologies, Barb_D. I know the series but never watched it. It's my father's generation, I think. "Set it to stun" is kinda cool, but I think nobody will understand me.

No, don't use "Set your cell phones on stun" unless you are with people who are certain to understand the reference. The geeky people I hang out with would. Smile

But you see the difference between "silent" and "mute," right? I use "mute" when the call is already in progress I don't want them to hear my words (or typing, if we are on the conference call and I'm doing two things at once) and I use "silent" when I'm in the movie theater and don't want the ring to disturb anyone else.

Yes, like the TV. When it's already on, I can mute it. I cannot mute it when it is not on. Right?

When I want to receive calls and don't want my cellphone to disturb anyone, I set my cellphone on vibrate.

Oh, we're different, you and I. I prefer to switch it off. Vibrate mode irritates me because when I carelessly put it on table, it makes a more disturbing noise. When it's on me, it makes me jumpy.

LOL - I usually turn mine off too. If it vibrates in my pocket, I usually jump and say "ooh!" which is hardly less distrubing than a quick ring!
