Molly's contentious posts are often over some very elementary concept from linguistics textbooks, so it's very possible that Molly is getting an introductory education in linguistics while doing all these other things.

Well, as you're always telling us, you've already had your "education" in linguistics, so we have to guess at what you are doing here. Hope you don't mind if some of us try educate ourselves on this educational forum.

BTW, would this post be considered as one from "some very elementary concept from linguistics textbooks"?

A common problem for language learners is language transfer -- speakers apply knowledge from their native language to a second language. Second language interference is similar, only that speakers import features of a learned language to their native language.

I agree with a part of Mr Pedantic's testimony where he argues that it is impossible to have all 77 busy teachers watch a video and send back their responses within less than 2 hours. According to the theory of probabilities, it is next to impossible. Just imagine, that one teaher might be in the middle of some important explanation and cannot be looking at the computer and see your message, another might be out to the rest room, yet another might be having dinner.
Besides, to upload the video to the intanet, you need to download it (5 min), place it into a shared folder (5 min), make sure that everyone has access to it, then send out a letter (take into account a possible time lag, since SMTP servers are not very fast).

Really, Molly, you're not tracking here. Admit it.

Great! Now what? More Brownie points from Mr P?

It's obvious that you haven't read the thread in detail.

If you want to kiss up to Mr P, at least do it in PMs. Please.

I trust my eyes, at least. Let's see just who sent this thread spinning off-topic, shall we?

Hi, Molly

I am not kissing up to anybody. I'm trying to pore over the issue as an unbiased observer (really, what's in it for me? Except for practicing my English creating "intricate" sentences with complicated words in them) Smile

Hi, Amy

Well, that's a tough question ! Laughing Taking into consideration the fact that Molly's account of her origin has been changed by her several times, I have all the rights to have second thoughts about what she says. Wink

Hi Alex
I'm still not convinced that Molly is a "she". Personally, I don't trust much of what Molly says. For some reason The Boy Who Cried Wolf frequently comes to mind when I read Molly's posts. Wink

Hi,

I've not got (gotten wow!) involved in any Molly correspondence to date and in the interests of impartiality I don't propose to start mollycoddling now. My question is: Will anyone ever be mollified on these forums or has that already happened?

Dear, poor, Mr P... . The "link" was a link to the AVI which I stored in our intranet. For teachers, we no longer allow any direct access to You Tube in our academy. Next move? Tick-tock. Why do you bother, Mr P. Way ahead of you, as I said earlier.

Do you think I e-mailed 77 teachers by individual e-mail? Or maybe we have a function called "e-teachers", eh? Hm. Yes, most did report back immediately because "school's out" and teachers are expected to be at home doing reports. They are getting paid to be available.

If the 77+ teachers are at home, why would you need to worry about "direct access" to Youtube in the workplace?

You would simply send them the weblink.

I am enchanted by the picture of 77 separate yet synchronised ESL teachers, hunched over their notebooks on a hot June morning in a small town somewhere in Spain – reading their email from Molly as one – downloading their 32MB video clip as one – perfectly comprehending the speaker as one – replying to Molly (who asks such wonderful questions) as one – smiling indulgently to themselves as they log off the network and wondering (as one) why Molly inconveniently posted the file to the intranet instead of simply putting it on a shared drive –

But did you say 77 teachers?

Molly wrote:
I can give a concrete context, but can mention no names, if that's OK. Here in Spain, I help out as an administrator in a language academy. Around 60% of the teaching staff are nonnative English speakers. All have a teaching certficate, but the academy only allows that 60% to teach up to the Intermediate Level.

That can't be right. You said there were 20 non-native teachers, earlier. But if there are 57 native speakers, and 60% of the teaching staff are non-native, that makes:

57 native teachers + 85.5 (poor chap) non-native teachers = 142.5 teachers in total.

So what did the other 65.5 non-native teachers say, when you sent them the link?
