Usage of foregone (A foregone conclusion if you say that sth is a foregone...) #1 (permalink) Sat Jun 21, 2008 19:55 pm   Usage of foregone (A foregone conclusion if you say that sth is a foregone...)

Hi,

I find this in the OALD:

FOREGONE:
adjective
Idioms: a foregone conclusion if you say that sth is a foregone conclusion, you mean that it is a result that is certain to happen: The outcome of the vote is a foregone conclusion.

=> So does it mean that "foregone" can only go with "conclusion" (with no other nouns?)

Many thanks
Nessie

"foregone"? #2 (permalink) Sat Jun 21, 2008 20:13 pm   "foregone"?

Hi Nessie

I'd say you might run across 'foregone' used with other words, however I would expect it to be pretty rare in contrast with the usage of 'foregone conclusion'.

You might also run into 'forgone' (i.e. without the letter E), but the meaning would likely be different.
