knock wood v.s. knock on wood

Knock on wood or touch wood but never knock wood.

I use 'knock on wood'.
There may be some who omit the word 'on', but I can't recall ever actually hearing it that way.

I heard Alf say "knock wood" (I believe you know Alf, don't you ;), a furry little alien with big black eyes and long snout). I looked "knock wood" up and found only "knock on wood", and that caused some confusion in my mind. Probably, I "misheard" what Alf said .
