On 31 January 1999, I bought the English SUN tabloid newspaper, and on the front page there were 10 reasons why Britain is the best nation in the world. I remember things like 'we ruled more countries than anyone else', 'we won 2 world wars and one world cup', 'we invented the train' and 'our language is spoken everywhere'.

Maybe people shouldn't be thinking like this anymore. I heard more than half of London is own by Indians. Some say it is just the law of nature. The British ruled India for 40 years, taking and taking and living on its richness.

I guess, what goes around, comes around?

Hi Ninazara

If people should not be thinking like the Sun, then how about your outdated statement?

Also as I made clear you can not allow the Sun or Ralf´s quote from this type of paper become a reflection of the view of the people.

Did I say that? Maybe next time I should say "some people" so that I won't make some people sore.

Hi

My moodiness is partially true, no coffee you see. Sad

We all have a tendency not to write as we mean, but then should we not be surprised if someone picks this up. Confused

Thanks Nina for the requalifying of your statement. I still think it is not that many. And we can state examples of both negative and positive sides of the perception for the English.

But picking and choosing quotes for whatever intention may lead to "provocation", as with the Sun, and as you so eloquently said what "goes around, comes around".

However the past is the past, and any nationality that wishes to allow this to taint their view of a people is fair, but not really up to date.

Are the English still living off these riches?

If we wish to look at the faults of the English, how about the 40 days rule http://news.uk.msn.com/forty-two-day-detention.aspx , or other more pertinent issues.

Hi Molly

Well blue beats red I guess, to this bull anyway. Evil or Very Mad

But lets concentrate on the questions, ay?

Or do you see it as your duty to see the failings in others.

Clarity of meaning withstanding, to the general public or otherwise.

English?..is that I can think of.

Oh BTW, I made a false report, it was not 40 years but more than 200 years.

The Sun it was what wrote:
we won two world wars and one world cup

I think the phrase (which was also to be found on t-shirts, in 2006) may have been a little tongue-in-cheek. It has more than a touch of bathos; it speaks to the deep national mortification over that single encounter with Jules Rimet; and of course the Sun is a notoriously post-modernistic text.

Cf. the "national anthem" of England supporters: the theme from the Great Escape. (It would have to be.)

Think you mean these:

Well, it really, really, really could happen
Yes, it really, really, really could happen
When the days they seem to fall through you, well just let them go

Cool

On the same album, these lines are classics:

Churchill got his lucky number but tomorrow there's another
Could be me, could be you, no silver spoon
Sticky teeth they rot too soon
You've got to have the best tunes or that's it, you've blown it

All we want is to be happy in our homes like happy families
Be the man on the beach with the world at his feet
Yes, it could be you, ooh oh

Jules Rimet's still dreaming...
