Q: When you ask if something is correct, by what standard do you expect an answer, if not standard English?

A: By the "standard" you think it comes from.

Very well; provide a sample reply to your question, where a respondent answers in the terms you suggest.

As an sample, easy. "Actually, neither of the given choices are correct in X standard English, but A is correct in X variant/variety of English".

In that case, you could have saved yourself a great deal of trouble, and simply accepted my original answer:

Beyond standard English, you might hear either of the original sentences in a regional form of BrE. You might hear the first (with "was") in East London, for instance; the second (with "were") in e.g. Yorkshire.

Though I'm a little puzzled as to why, if you already had an answer to your own "easy" question, you decided to ask it in the first place.

Where did I show I had an answer to that question?

And, where did I say I didn't accept your reply?

Put yourself in the position of a non-native speaker, asking your original question. Then reread your model answer. Then look for the sentences on Google. Then put 2 and 2 together.

You have forgotten that at English Page you post in the guise of a non-native speaker.

So why should Rusty and Pete assume that you know those examples aren't standard English?

MrP
