On American TV today, I saw a lawsuit brought by a woman whose dog had been mauled by a pit bull terrier (a very aggressive attack dog, bred for fighting) against the neighbor who owned the dog. The woman was suing for reimbursement of the veterinary bills she had to pay for her dog's treatment after the attack.

The judge asked the neighbor why she had this attack dog, and she said it was because she lived in a dangerous neighborhood and needed protection. The judge then told her that the state where she lived did not interfere with people's constitutional right to own weapons, so he asked her why she didn't have a gun or two instead of an attack dog. His premise was that a person can control a gun, but cannot control an attack dog. She would not be in court if she had owned a gun instead of the dog.

What's your opinion? If someone lives in a dangerous place, is it better to own a gun or a vicious dog?

In my opinion it is a matter of a person's responsibility. If you're careless, then you should not have deadly weapons, such as vicious ferocious dogs or a gun. The person in question should have taken every precaution to ensure that her dog would be on the leash, because with dogs you can never tell what's on their mind - they might seem calm at first, but very belligerent next. The same thing with guns. The defendant might mishandle a gun so it would accidentally go off and cause harm. Also the defendant might place it somewhere where her children can easily take it from and start playing with it and kill/wound each other, or somebody else.
So, as you can see, an irresponsible person should be deprived of the right to have ANY deadly weapons.

Why not use the alarm system? My father was skeptical before but when our car was stolen the second time, with an attempt by the burglars ripping off the window, my father has it installed, so all the exits are wired and once we turned in the key, the alarm will go off if anybody attempts to try to dislodge the windows/doors.

Professional American burglars know how to disable alarm systems very quickly. Besides that, in many dangerous cities, the police are too busy and don't answer calls unless someone is either dead or in danger of dying.

Yes, our cars were stolen by professionals. It just blew off our minds when they removed the heavy galvanized electric powered gate. Just like magic!

They blew your minds, Nina. I wouldn't say they blew them off. Wink

On the one hand, a gun can't wake you up when it hears an odd noise in the night. On the other, it can shoot a dog; whereas the converse very rarely happens.

It doesn't have to be a vicious dog. I don't even trust a so-called non-vicious one.

Our dog performs doorbell duty. He's also very talented in cleaning up dinner scraps and locating skunks outside the house. The cats in our household seem fond of getting the dog to demonstrate his true character. He's basically a knucklehead and a wimp. Laughing

Amy, they sound like they are very dear to you. I guess not all people are blessed with the ability to enjoy the beauty of this creature of God that I fear so much.

the dog could be better, when someone wants to threaten you.
You might be too scared to fire a gun at someone.I dont think it would be easy to shoot anyone for an avarage person. On the other hand, a dog is just as easy to handle as an alarm system for an experienced criminal. -cemicals, or a cat sometimes will do it.
If you want to make sure, have them both and quit sleeping

From personal experience, geese are good watch'dog' too, at least during the day, but at night I suspect they are blind. During the day, they make noises to anything that doesn't look familiar but at night they don't.

I don't think using a dog for this kind of purpose is good, neither is gun, they are bound to hurt someone some time. The best way is to move out from the ghost town.
