If I give someone a chocolate box would that be called a souvenir or a gift(present).

I think, a present, for me a souvenir is something that you buy or keep to remind yourself of a special occasion or a place you have visited. Although a box of chocolates with some pictures of a place can also be a souvenir Smile.

You would call it a gift or a present.

As Inga mentions, a souvenir is something you potentially keep forever in order to remember something. In fact, "souvenir" is the French word for "remember".

It's not possible to keep chocolate forever and ever (it will go bad), so chocolate would definitely not be a souvenir.
