Hello, can you help me to find out the meaning of this sentence?
The dustman's wage could hardly keep his body and soul together.
I wonder what "keep his body and soul together" means.
Thank you in advance.

Hi sophie.
I've just found that expression in my dictionary. It means that his wage is so low that it is not enough to pay his most basic needs.
