English morphology and syntax Thu Jul 10, 2008 20:59 pm  English morphology and syntax

Hi,
Could you recommend me some sources that focus on english Morphology and Syntax? I would like to focus on all the topics connected with analysing tree structures, word formatations, analysing the place of predicates etc. etc. I have already went through Understanding English Grammar: A Linguistic Approach by R. Wardhaugh, but I'm seeking for some sources similar to this book (Wardhaugh's approach is not always obvious to me Wink

thanks in advance

Hi Michauek,

I highly recommend this book. It's concise, straight forward and a good read.

A much better read than the book Ralf suggested (it used to be hell to teach from "Fromkin and Rodman", although I think they've overhauled it quite a bit now) would be George Yule's book "The Study of Language". It takes you through phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and other aspects of language (especially English) and is quite easy to read.

As for tree structures, you need to look into syntax books. Any book by Andrew Radford will be excellent. I found that the one I had the easiest time understanding was "A Concise Introduction to Syntactic Theory: The Government-Binding Approach" by Elizabeth A. Cowper. (You can get brand new copies on Amazon.com for as little as $2.57.)

There are some good books on morphology also, but most of them aren't specifically on English morphology. In the English-speaking world, we usually learn morphological principles as they apply to all languages, not only to English. All you have to do is snoop around Amazon.
