i guess it's D . the because of the noun "lives" . But however , I'm not sure because in some case , we can use "the" even though there is a plural noun after it .
Am i right ?

D is wrong, but 'lives' is no problem. 'The' is inappropriate because 'people' have already been mentioned. It should read 'their lives'.
