They need to express their opinions, too. |

Of course, but how are we to tell when a person is expressing, on this website, his personal opinion and when that of a moderator? |

It's got to be a pain in the butt for the moderator to keep up with, but a fairly common usage I've seen on some boards is for a moderator to use one color of text (something that obviously stands out) for his or her 'mod voice' and another color text (usually the default color) for their personal comments. _________________ Native speaker but not a perfect speaker.

Yeah, I've seen the same thing. They usually use the red color to put their foot down and restore the order. |

. Oh boy!-- and after I have tried to convince so many posters to avoid all the garish, distracting technicolor. Sorry-- I'll stick with monochrome. . _________________ Canadian-American native speaker who teaches English for a living at Mister Micawber's ESL cafe: Interview with Mister Micawber |

And now we've got ordinary members making attempts at moderating!

Yankee is one of the main off-topic posters here. I've never seen her suggest the closing of threads where she, Mr P and Jamie go way off-topic and for numerous posts. What's happening? |

Are you attempting to stifle the opinions of everyone except yourself, Molly? Personally, I find my suggestion (that a particular thread be locked) to be much less drastic than, for example, your demand in the quote from July 16th. But that's just my own opinion. . |

And the context for that July 16th post was?
So, If I suggested deleting off-topic posts, which has already been done on this site so no new thing, it was because I didn't see the need to delete a thread in which on-topic posters were already participating. You suggested closing a whole thread.
Well, you got what you wanted, so...
Note Alan's words though:

Maybe that also goes for suggesting closing threads on a personal whim. |

English-test forums theme song?
Wasn't the July 16th post something totally inappropriate, like an advertisement for games or something, that a few people happened to tag onto before the original post was deleted?
I sometimes do that, make a snide comment on such a post, with the full expectation that my post will be deleted along with the advert/totally unrelated post. I think such was the context of Yankee's comment suggesting deleting the thread, no?
RE: All these demands for deleting or locking posts that go off topic. If we lock or delete every thread where somebody disagrees, gets their feelings hurt, takes offense, etc. then we're left with a rather empty forum. Spammage, thread hijacking, and the like are features of forums. If it's not something totally unrelated to the site (such as the gaming advertisement), and it's in the proper area (if not the mods will move it to the relevant area, or move it at such time it devolves into something else) then my suggestion is to try and ignore that which bothers you, avoid fanning the flames, try and post only relevant (at times this is a bit subjective) commentary, and finally stockpile the following. There's no danger of ODing on these, so use liberally.
