I have in my stereo my Country (music) CD... songs I burned while Napster was legal.
These songs do show a bit of the lexicon of the southern USA. To this site I have heretofore proffered the lyrics of superstar Country artist Brad Paisley's smash single "Two People Fell In Love". In this topic I'll add more Country lyrics. If nothing else, said lyrics will show another side of our great language and, in true Country fashion, pull a tear or two from your eyes.
Without further ado, I present "The Baby" by Blake Shelton:
My brother said that I was rotten to the core I was the youngest child, so I got by with more I guess she was tired by the time I came along She'd laugh until she cried... I could do no wrong She would always save me.. because I was her baby
I worked a factory in Ohio, a shrimp boat in the Bayou I drove a truck in Birmingham Turned 21 in Cincinnati.. I called home to Mom and Daddy I said, "Your boy is now a man." She said, "I don't care if you're 80," "You'll always be my baby."
She loved that photograph of our whole family She'd always point us out for all her friends to see "That's Greg, he's doin' great.. he really loves his job," "And Ronnie, with his two kids.. how 'bout that wife he's got," "And that one's kinda crazy, but that one is my baby."
I got a call in Alabama, said "Come on home to Louisiana," "And come as fast as you can fly." "Cuz your mama really needs you, and says she's gotta see you" "...She might not make it through the night." The whole way, I drove 80 (128 KPH) So she could see her baby.
It looked like she was sleepin' And my family had been weepin' By the time that I got to her side And I knew that she'd been taken And my heart, it was breakin'... I never got to say goodbye. I softly kissed that lady... And cried just like a baby. _________________ Billie Jean is not my lover. Hee. |

...and now Martina McBride's "Independence Day":
Well she seemed alright by dawn's early light Though she looked a little worried and weak She tried to pretend he wasn't drinkin' again, But Daddy left the proof on her cheek.
Now I was only eight years old that summer, And I always seemed to be in the way So I took myself down to the fair in town On Independence Day.
Well word gets around in a small, small town They said he was a dangerous man But Mama was proud and she stood her ground She knew she was on the losin' end
Some folks whispered, some folks talked But everybody looked the other way And when time ran out there was no one about On Undependence Day.
Let freedom ring! Let the white dove sing Let the world know that today is the day of reckoning. Let the weak be strong Let the right be wrong. Roll the stone away, let the guilty pay It's Independence Day
Well she lit up the sky that Fourth of July By the time that the firemen come They just put out the flames and took down some named And sent me to the county home
Now I ain't sayin' it's right or it's wrong But maybe it's the only way Talk about your revolution... It's Independence Day.
Let freedom ring! Let the white dove sing. Let the whole world know that today is the day of reckoning. Let the weak be strong Let the right be wrong Roll the stone away, let the guilty pay It's Independence Day.
Roll the stone away It's Independence Day. |

| There are some obvious typos that I'm unable to fix -- the iPhone doesn't have a scrolling function, so I'm stuck on the first paragraph in the Edit page. I'll fix the mistakes at work on Tuesday. In the meantime, please download the song. |

"Wish You Were Here" by Mark Wills
They kissed goodbye at the terminal gate. She said "You're gonna be late if you don't go." He held her tight, said "I'll be all right," "And I'll call you tonight to let you know."
He bought a postcard.. on the front it just said "Heaven" With a picture of the ocean and the beach. And the simple words he wrote her said he loved her and they told her How he'd hold her if his arms would reach.
"Wish you were here. Wish you could see this place." "Wish you were near. I wish I could touch your face." "The weather's nice, it's paradise, it's summertime all year." "There's some folks we know, they say 'Hello' and 'Miss you so'" "Wish you were here."
She got a call that night, but it wasn't from him It didn't sink in right away. "Ma'am, the plane went down. Our crews have searched the ground..." "No survivors found," she heard him say.
But somehow she got a postcard in the mail that just said "Heaven" With a picture of the ocean and the beach And the simple words he wrote her Said he loves her and they told her How he'd hold her if his arms would reach.
Wish you were here Wish you could see this place Wish you were here, I wish I could touch your face The weather's nice, it's paradise, it's summertime all year There's some folks we know They say "Hello" and "Miss you so" Wish you were here.
The weather's nice in Paradise It's summertime all year And all the folks we know, they say "Hello, I miss you so." Wish you were here. Wish you were here. |

okay, I love this one. every nation could have one like this. This is ours:
If tommorow all the things were gone I'd worked for all my life And I had to start again with just my children and my wife Thank my lucky stars that I'm livin' here today Cuz the flag still stands for freedom And they can't take that away
And I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free And I won't forget the men who died Who gave that right to me And I proudly stand up next to you To defend her still today For there ain't no doubt I love this land God bless the USA
From the lakes of Minnesota To the hills of Tennessee Across the plains of Texas From sea to shining sea From Detroit down to Houston And New York to LA There is pride in every American heart And it's time we stand and say
That I'm proud to be an American Where at least I know I'm free And I won't forget the men who died Who gave that right to me And I gladly stand up next to you To defend her still today Cuz there ain't no doubt I love this land God bless the USA.
repeat chorus
(my fingers are tired. I'll edit all posts Tuesday)

For heaven's sake, people, hunt for this song:
That's What Friends Are For
You have a lead singer, Dionne Warwick, who is good in her own right... but who is absolutely the scrub when you consider that this quartet is comprised of:
The aforementioned Dionne Warwick, and
Elton John Stevie Wonder Gladys Knight
You all know who EJ and Stevie are, with their decades of chart-topping hits. Some of you may not know, however, that Gladys Knight is mentioned with Aretha Franklin as being the greatest female R&B singer ever. Gladys sang with The Pips in her prime.
In this song she has her solo toward the end... shehas that gorgeous vibrato, that wondrous trillability, that great throaty sound. Her part is that which I like best.
Look up the song online... its video is everywhere, 25 years after it was a hit. |
