"Await" and "wait" have similar meaning, so they are synonymous. But, is there any difference when we put them in use?
thanks.

When do I use "await" and when "wait"? #2 (permalink) Tue Jul 15, 2008 13:16 pm   When do I use "await" and when "wait"?

Hi

I would say I use it as an emphasis of register, or meaning.

You can say;

I am waiting for my exam results.
I am awaiting my exam results.

The second has more of a sense of anticipation, and sounds more formal.

as in "The accused was awaiting the verdict of the judge.

It think it heightens the meaning or process of the wait.

Hope that helps.
