In general, it seems men are judged according to their work and women according to their appearance. Do you agree?

I guess you're beyond this kind of discussion. Nevermind, lots of other threads to play on. Wink

Just to add to the above: some commentaors have suggested that the reason women tend to use the standard form of the language more than men do is because of appearance.

I'm getting a little tired of Molly's 1960s nostalgia questions.

As always, Jamie: why do you participate in such threads then? Are you trolling?

And this is far from 60s:

Of course, we all know that you are beyond such comments due to your linguistics degree, but some of us are yet that high in the ivory towers.

BTW, what did you do your university thesis on? What was the title of that thesis?

What do you think, folks? Shall I just delete threads like this or leave them as a lesson and a warning?

Why would you want to delete the thread? Just delete the off-topic posts. For example, why didn't you delete Skrej's post?

Hi MM,

IMO, deleting threads only makes sense in case of spamming or insulting entries. I know that one could argue that Molly's entries revolve around the same 2-3 topics over and over again, but you can always choose not to answer them (in which case you'd avoid accusations of 'trolling'). I don't think they have any negative effects on the forum as such.

And trolling and flaming, right?

As a moderator, would you call these posts insulting?

And would you say that the topics below are common?

Quote:
Why has English become a "lingua franca"? What are the differences between American and British English? How do you define a native speaker? In this forum you can discuss any questions about the development of the English language itself and related cultural and sociolinguistics issues.

Some of my topics:

Can native speaker intuition be trusted?
What is/do you use X in your variant?
Let’s talk about the value of stigmatised forms.
Race/gender and language use.
Discrimination and language use.
The use of corpora in ESL.

How could those be "have any negative effects on the forum as such"?

I'd say they're pretty harmless if not much wittier than other flippant retorts I've read.

I think generally women tend to be in an industry that needs them to be presentable or appear in a certain way. Modelling, cosmetology, or any profession of catering to clientele or selling/promoting products. I don't have the figures, but yes, probably there are more women than men in these industries. This might lead to people blaming it on the gender but I think it is because of the nature of the job itself.

For example, at the particular plant of the company where I work, there is no woman holding important roles in the sales department yet we can see the male employees look more polished than the non-sales employees. Contrary to us engineers/scientists, who wear ugly smurfy blue jumpers, they wear suits. They also speak and walk differently, from my observation. I think it's because they are always presenting, and they need to keep up appearances. Even when they are not dealing with clients, they wear the jumpers differently. Engineers usually roll up their sleeves, but the sales people button them down. If there were any female sales person, I would've expected the same. So in my opinion, it's not the gender, but the job.

But I would imagine, in a more gender-equal society, there would be more women in sales. In Japan there are other reasons (not because of their incapability) why there are not so many women in the sales department. I am not sure whether this has changed or is changing or has not changed at all.

Well, even in modelling, male models are required to be pretty. And a lot of male makeup artists wear makeup on.

And I can tell you, as an engineer, on the job, there is no difference.

Only this, if I am not mistaken, there is a rule that says I cannot get pregnant in the first year of my employment.

Oh boy, I can see the headlines now: "Company Institutes Random Pregnancy Testing"

'Course, I guess they could just dip the little stick in the same jar they use for drug tests... Confused

Then there's going to be a lawsuit regarding sexual discrimination regarding testing procedures.

But wait, you're not in America, so maybe not on the lawsuits. Smile

To say one is tired of another person's posts is seen as witty where you come from, is it?
