When do we use the simple present in speaking and writing?

All the time! Here are a few examples:

I get up at 7 o'clock every morning.

My wife usually prepares breakfast.

The train calls at Houston station at 8:15am.

My students are often late.

I sometimes have sandwiches for lunch.

The sun always shines on TV.
