Oh, I thought that is just how the French call Japan.

By the way, now that I think about it, Jippon is probably the correct one because 日in日本has the On-yomi, jitsu.

I agree, Cantik. What I knew was exactly what you described now and Jippon first became Portuguese and Spanish and then changed to Japon, which is still used in French, Russian, etc. On the other hand, Nippon is also derived from the same Chinese root for “the place where the sun comes from,” or the Land of the Rising Sun.
