Hi,

I read the following sentence in a book. I don’t understand why there is no article before ‘reason’ there. Would the meaning of the sentence change if I replaced ‘reason’ by ‘a reason’?

Do not do it unless you have reason to believe the trend outside your range of data is the same as the trend for your data.

Thanks,

MG.

Hi musicgold

The expression 'have reason to believe' is a common collocation and it means basically the same thing as 'have any reason(s) to believe'.

So if I replaced 'reason' with 'a reason' would the sentence sound odd?

Hi musicgold

No, I wouldn't say it would sound odd.
Perhaps, for example, the person you're talking to might use 'a' if you have already previously mentioned that you have one specific reason to believe something (but have not yet stated exactly what the reason is).
