Hi,

Which one of the following sentences is more appropriate?

1.‘…but the final straw was the regional district decided to increase property taxes by 35 per cent.’

2.‘…but the final straw was the regional district’s decision to increase property taxes by 35 per cent.’

Thanks,

MG.

The final straw requires a noun phrase to describe it, so the second one, with "decision," is correct.

(You could also say "was when the district decided to...")

#1 could also work with the addition of the word 'that' before 'the regional district decided'.

...but the final straw was that the regional district decided to increase....

35% increase? Shocked Holy cow, that would be a final straw for me, too! Evil or Very Mad

Thanks. Sentence #1 was in a newspaper. I found it little odd, and came up with #2.
