Hi! I'm also set to take the TOEFL IBT this month.
Do you know if ETS really picks from any of the 185 topics usually listed in several TOEFL websites, for its writing section? Or, can we expect being asked to write about topics outside that list?

Ok, For the listening you can buy a book called "Delta's preparation book for TOEFL" or something like that, it contains an audio CD for the listening, you can work and practice by it, hope it helps you for this section.
For improving your vocabulary, there are plenty books called "essential words for TOEFL" or something like this, they usually contain about 500~1200 words for the TOEFL.
And for writing, this forum has a great section for new learners, write your essays and post them on the section of "Preparation forum for the TOEFL test and essay samples collection". I am sure that you will receive good suggestions and advices for your writing.
By the way, try to write correctly and without grammatical and spelling errors, even when you are posting an ordinary request, because in this way you can learn and improve your grammar structures.
