Stress on sentence: I allowed him to clean the car ('ow' from allowed?) #1 (permalink) Sun Aug 10, 2008 1:01 am   Stress on sentence: I allowed him to clean the car ('ow' from allowed?)

Hi guys,
need your expert help again.

I really can't work out where the stress(es) lies in these sentences, whenever I say it to myself I keep stressing the wrong things.

1)I made him clean the car (i think it's on the made and 'ean' from clean)
2)I let him clean the car (on the 'et' from let?)
3)I allowed him to clean the car ('ow' from allowed?)

I am really not sure so would like some opinions, also any advice on how to find the word stress in future.

Any help will be much appreciated!
Thank you

.
Stress depends on what the speaker wishes to draw attention to, so it is not consistent within a single sentence. However, verbs, adverbs and negations tend regularly to assume stress ( ' ), while the main sentence stress ( '' ) usually comes near the end of the sentence:

1) I 'made him 'clean the ''car.
2) I 'let him 'clean the ''car.
3) I al 'lowed him to 'clean the ''car.
