You need choose because there are many things available and you have to pick one of them and you have to decide which one.

Choose needs a "from"? #5 (permalink) Mon Jun 06, 2005 8:12 am   Choose needs a "from"?

Hi Alan,

We've been tought right from our childhood that "we choose from a set of things". There is no "from" in the question. so how do you explain choose as a correct option? I felt that, in this specific case "things" would have been a better choice.

Why can't I use "follow"?
There are things - such explanations - difficult to follow... right?

Alan is quite correct. Our upbringing in English points us immediately to " choose " whereas your non-native minds are seeking other preferences.

Things was mentioned in the question, therefore our native minds scream,
" Items ", therefore we must choose.

Your minds go down your accustomed routes and seek alternatives which, unfortunately are wrong.
