Refrain/restrain #2 (permalink) Tue Mar 29, 2005 9:08 am   Refrain/restrain

Yes - two separate words. Restrain means check/control/restrict. Refrain often used with the preposition from means not do as in: You are asked to refrain from smoking/making a noise.
