What is the difference between "Buy" and "purchase"?

Hi,

To me 'purchase' is as it were the formal word and 'buy' the informal one. You would go to the shops to buy food. If you were writing to a shop and wanted to explain that the item you bought is faulty, you might well write: Last week I purchased a washing machine a your store ...
