Hi Ralf, Could you please be a bit more specific? I mean the difference between 'adjustment to' and 'adjustment for'. I think 'adjustment for' can still be used because I found this in the Longman Dictionary: adjustment: a small change made to a machine, system, or calculation adjustment for Once we make the adjustments for inflation, the fall in interest rates is quite small. adjustment to a slight adjustment to the mechanism _________________ :(... something we never have again, I know... Hi Nessie,
You are right there.
If you 'adjust sth. for sth.', you modify it in a way to make it suitable for the needs of something, or have an effect on something else.
He adjusted his punch for catching his opponent on the jaw.
If you make 'adjustments to sth.', you make a small change to a mechanism/technique/theory etc.
The family made adjustments to their house to keep the mosquitoes out.
...
I'm not an accountant or a banker, so I can't give you the exact lingo here. But you can - to confuse you just that little bit more - make adjustments for/to inflation :) _________________ Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL Preparation & TOEFL Vocabulary Learn more: How to Become an English Teacher |
