Here is another article:

http://www.city-journal.org/2008/eon0820mt.html

As of yesterday the Russians were doing nothing about withdrawing from Georgia. And according to the article, the problem is not only with the Russian army, but with Russian paramilitary units that are looting and causing various sorts of mayhem.

Note the quote from a US ambassador to the USSR long ago: "Russia can have at its borders only enemies or vassals."

Is it Georgia or South Ossetia?

Anyway, do you think any European country other than England, for fear of losing the energy supplies, would strongly oppose Russia if it didn't pull its military out of South Ossetia in the near future?

I read somewhere that Georgia had sent its military troops to Iraq to endear itself to US. If it was true, why didn't US, other than vocally, support Georgia? Or did it?

And why do you think US plans to set up a base in Poland? What do you think will be the repercussions of this move? Does US fear the resurgence of Russia?

They're not moving out of Georgia proper, not just the separatist areas of Georgia.

That's the big question. Russia's betting that they won't, and initial reaction from most of the NATO countries doesn't look good. That was part of Russia's strategy of getting Western Europe so reliant on Russian oil deliveries.

Countries had reasons for joining the US in the Iraq invasion other than to "endear themselves to the US".

Humanitarian aid has been sent, but other than that it's been mostly talk.

The base in Poland is for missile interceptor systems in case the Russians or some other country start shooting nuclear missiles at Europe. The system is being deployed in Poland and the Czech Republic for a number of reasons but mainly because (1) the farther east it is the better it will work, and (2) the people in the East European nations lived under Soviet domination until so recently that they understand what it is like, so they are willing to participate and cooperate in their own defense in order to prevent Russia from taking control of their countries again. The West European nations have been under the US defense "umbrella" since World War II and never had to suffer in this way, so they show very little willingness even to defend themselves, let alone help an ally.

I think only the Russians don't fear a resurgence of Russia.
