Hi, all

Could you tell me if the word "bear" in the following context means "to use" (if not then what) (I'm rushed off my feet trying to figure out its meaning)

Each of her offsprings could bear close watching

Thanks !

Hi,

'Bear' in your sense can mean worthwhile doing/warrant/stand and so on. It is often used in a negative sense as in: It doesn't bear thinking about how much suffering is caused following an earthquake.

Hi Alex

Although I wouldn't argue with your rewording (with the word "use"), I'd say that definition 10 here is a little more precise.

By the way, the plural form of "offspring" is "offspring". ;)
