Toefl® Essay: Should governments improving roads or public transport

The transportation system of a city reflects its development. It is the first impression the city casts on a person who is visiting the place for the first time. Both public transport and roads play their respective parts in exhibiting the development of a place. But if the government needs to decide between improving roads and highways or improving public transport, I feel that public transport should be given a major share of attention.
To support my view I would like to point out that the public transport caters to the demands of a major share of population. While roads and highways can be used only by people how own cars and automobiles, public transport can be used by those how cannot afford it.
I personally feel that, if well maintained, people prefer to use public transport for commuting daily, like going to schools or offices. This saves them the hassle for driving and looking for a parking spot. This way they also gain time which some people utilise of reading morning news paper or reading books while other socialize with fellow commuters. None of these advantages are possible with personal transport. Also trains are not susceptible to delays due to traffic jams and can be considerablly faster than road traffic. This makes public transport more trustable for going to work.
From above mentioned points it can be established that if the quality of public transport is acceptable, people will prefer it over driving personal vehicles. As more and more people use trains the number of cars on the roads will decrease, as will the number of available parking spaces. Also as the larger number of people use public transport it will be profitable for the state as they will earn more money.
Using public transport can be seen as taking car pooling to a higher level. Reduced cars on the street will not only prove advantageous for road traffic but also for environment in general as pollution will take a dip.

To summarise, people like to use public transport if it is well maintained. Use of public transport not only helps the citizens and government of the state but also environment in general. Thus I feel that it’s in everybody’s favour to improve public transport as compared to developing roads and highways.
