Waxed has several meanings.

It can literally mean to apply wax. ' I waxed the car.'

It can also mean to increase in size, numbers, strength, or development. The opposite is wane, and they're often used together as an idiom, meaning to increase and decrease. 'Their influence waxed and waned over time, depending on which person was in charge.'

It can mean to become or assume a particular characteristic. 'After his 3rd drink, he waxed poetic about his old love affairs.'
