Hi all,

I have some knowleage about "beging" and "started " also, please see the below:

"begin" puts particular emphasis on status of sth.
"start " puts particular emphasis on result of sth.

Is anyone agree with me for that?

Thanks.

at the start / at (in) the beginning #48 (permalink) Tue Feb 08, 2011 15:21 pm   at the start / at (in) the beginning

Hi! I just wanted to say that I really appreciated Alan's article, the beginning was hilarious and the examples were really instructive. I had never known the two verbs could have those nuances, I thought it was just a matter of usage. I was very much surprised to learn the slight difference between "Shall we start?" and "Shall we begin?", I guess that in Italian (my mother tongue) this difference would be conveyed by the speaker's intonation only, although there are different translations for "start / begin" too. Great article! But now I'm beginning to have doubts about the adverbial phrases "at the start" and "at the beginning / in the beginning"...

Alan's explanation of the difference between 'start' and 'begin' #51 (permalink) Fri Aug 26, 2011 20:01 pm   Alan's explanation of the difference between 'start' and 'begin'

I would like to start from approving of Alan's approach - such pairs are really easier to understand when looked upon as characters - relaxed (begin) and kind of urgent (start). It really is helpful, it's like an eye-opener for a non-English-speaker - many thanks..

I think the article was helpful.

I have began to learn English many years ago, but I have just started to learn grammar. My grammar is not good, because I had never started to learn it, it's time to begin.
I need to begin to learn grammar and it's better if I will start right now!

How is that?!

Hello Mr. Alan,
I had the desire to read your article but when I started reading I saw that I do not understand much. Probably the solution is that more and more I read but my knowledge of grammar that we do not.
