Good morning/afternoon or evening Alan.
I am very happy with your clear letter about "greeting expressions"
First of all I would like to exppress you that I never had understood why a couple of people say how do you do? within they are waiting response. Now with you explanation I can see that two questions are left hanging in the air and unanswered it is a simple habit.
By othe side I think that the speaker talk faster. Is it real?
Thanks so much
Angelu.

Hello to everybody,
Hope you are doing well!

Concerning the question How sociability you are?
My answer is : Not very much, especially with people who speaks English better than me.
I just find myself under pressure. Although I know what I want to say, my sentences came very unclear.
I want to say everything at once, so it is a mess.
Maybe this is just of complexity of not knowing very well English :-(.

Cheers :-)

Good morning/afternoon/evening, Alan,

I have read your lesson and it's very helpful. Thank you! But I have some trouble in understanding your lesson.

'She soon learnt that people in big cities hurrying to work aren't a friendly lot.' Does 'people aren't a friendly lot' mean 'people aren't very friendly' or lot is a noun which means people?

Best regards

'Lot' there is akin to 'group', Sanya.

People in big cities aren't very friendly when they are (among the group of people who are) hurrying to work.

It depends on your friends Anam! there is no prescribed right way, especially when conversing informally.

See you tomorrow / see you soon / Bye for now are all possible.

Greetings !
Your essay is again very interesting. I often thought the words people said when seeing and parting oneanother in English were rather simple but reading this, I find I was wrong. And more than that, I learn also here the difference between words I thought would be the same, ex. 'Don't mention it' and 'Not at all'. Thank you Alan!
P.S. But about the audio recording, could you have it read a bit slower? Having read it once and listened to it several times, I can still not clearly hear all the words to fully comprehend it as I wish I could.

G'day everyone,
On the subject of greeting, there are many ways that people around the world greet each other. For instance, in Italy people say "Bon Journo", while Germans say "Guten Tag", and
in Thailand we say "Sawaddee" which is used for greeting any time of the day or night.
In Australia the other day it was raining and I got on a bus to TAFE. I greeted the bus driver with "good morning" and he replied "Good weather, isn't it?" and I replied "good weather for the ducks". All the passengers laughed which meant that I had cracked a good joke that day.
No matter which country you are in, greeting people politely is a good way to 'break the ice' which allows people to then engage in conversation. Of course, a greeting is always better if it's made with a big bright smile.

Regards,
Unchan
