Hi,

'Unreadable' could means simply that you can't read it because of the handwriting or whatever or that it's badly written from a language point of view. 'Illegible' means that you can't read it because of the script/handwriting. I'm glad I'm typing this and you would be too because my handwriting is very difficult to read - sometimes I can't make it out later myself!

Maybe you should have gone into medicine, Alan. Doctors are notorious for their illegible handwriting. Laughing

Hi Lilish
There are also other things besides text and handwriting that can be read. Nowadays there are lots of different things that contain data, and the data is designed to be read by a device. For example, a barcode or a CD or even the magnetic strip on your credit card might be "unreadable" if they are damaged, but they would not be called "illegible".
